Quotes of Encouragement

"An ordinary occupation done conscientiously builds the kingdom of God.  Jesus built the kingdom as a carpenter before He built it as a rabbi.  And He taught us in the parable of the talents that the question for disciples is not which callings they have but how faithfully they pursue them."

For You light my lamp ; The LORD my God illumines my darkness.  For by You I can run upon a troop ; And by my God I can leap over a wall.  As for God, His way is blameless ; The word of the LORD is tried ; He is a shield to all who take refuge in Him.  For who is God, but the LORD ? And who is a rock, except our God, the God who girds me with strength And makes my way blameless ?  He makes my feet like hinds' feet, And sets me upon my high places.  He trains my hands for battle, So that my arms can bend a bow of bronze.  You have also given me the shield of Your salvation, And Your right hand upholds me; And Your gentleness makes me great.  You enlarge my steps under me, And my feet have not slipped.

~Psalm 18:28-36, NASB~

"God will never leave you empty.  If something is taken away, He will replace it with something better.  If He denies your request in a certain area, it is because He wishes to give you what is best.  If He asks you to put something down, it is so you can pick up something greater."

Musings and other stuff

I'm spending this afternoon doing homework in my room alone, watching the snow fall, and listening to the wonderful Suzy Bogguss.  It is quiet in the hall and my room is dim and peaceful.  The snow falling from the sky looks like feathery bits of white cotton, drifting down softly and silently.  I'm feeling grateful this afternoon - what better way to spend it than this?

Okay, I know, I haven't posted much lately, so I've got some catching up to do.  I've been back at Calvin for about a week, and it's good to be back!  We're on interim right now.  Interim is a 3 week term during which students take one (accelerated) class for 3 hours every weekday.  I'm taking a class on the American Civil War and Reconstruction Period, and I absolutely love it!  It's one of my favorite periods in history to learn about, and the Prof is great, and so is our textbook.  Tomorrow should be especially fun - we're playing a simulation strategy game, and I'm commanding an infantry unit.  I hope that's not too much of a handicap to our army... :P
This interim it's been nice to spend some good quality time with my roommate and my other close friends on this floor.  I really miss some of the absent sophomores, though.  I can't wait till they come back for second semester.I miss all my friends at home, but I am so grateful for the incredible friends I have found here.  They add so much to my life!  God is pretty awesome, don't you think?
I got to build my first legit snowman!  We made him look like Olaf from Frozen, and he was pretty awesome.  I can put up a picture later.  We are going ice skating in about a week, too!  It'll be my first time, and I am pretty excited!  It is such an incredible blessing to get to live somewhere different from where I've grown up, and experience so many new things!  I love the beach, and the great California weather (most of the time), but snow is pretty awesome, too!  It is just so exciting to get to do so many fun new things, and experience the beauty of a Michigan winter.
God was gracious to even get me here this month.  I was supposed to fly from CA to MI on the 7th, but my first flight got cancelled.  That could have been a real problem, as classes were scheduled to start on the 8th, but God had that covered as well.  MI weather was so bad that Calvin postponed the start of interim to the 9th.  I still had to find a new flight, but He had that figured out, too.  I found a new flight for the 8th, and had an extra day at home.  Once I got over my sinful anxiety over changed plans, it turned out to be kind of a fun adventure.  Things mostly went as planned after that, until I reached Chicago.  My plane was 2 and a half hours late, and didn't even board till almost 9:30 pm.  Thankfully, though, I found a friend from Calvin (and his friends) in the airport, so I had someone to at least sit with and talk to a little.  We finally all reached Grand Rapids sometime after 11:00pm, and I still had to wait for my bags.  Man, was it good to see my friends after that long journey!  My friends Jake and Jake were at the airport to pick me up and we finally reached Calvin's campus a little after midnight.  Class was in a little over 8 hours...
Anyway, there is a little update on my adventures, and the story of how God was faithful through it all.  I hope you all have a wonderful weekend!
